LUNCH Meeting - Bendigo Groundwater Project

Project overview

Large volumes of mine-impacted groundwater exist in historical mine workings beneath the city of Bendigo. These elements occur naturally within the bedrock beneath Bendigo. They can however be released into the groundwater when unearthed by mining activities and left to interact with water and air.  Without management, this water would seep into Bendigo Creek, releasing odour and metals in the centre of Bendigo. This would affect the creek's water quality and biodiversity and flood the Central Deborah Gold Mine tourist attraction.

In its 2022-23 budget, the Victorian Government funded $51.83 million over 3 years to deliver an integrated management solution.  This solution was developed in consultation with several agencies and the Dja Dja Wurrung Clans Aboriginal Corporation (DJAARA).

Natalie and Mick will provide some history of mining and groundwater, why the project is needed and what is being built.

Natalie Trotter

Natalie is a civil engineer who has been managing the project for DEECA for the last 6 years.  Prior to joining the DEECA Natalie worked for Yarra Valley Water, John Holland Tunnelling and overseas with Atkins Consulting.  Natalie lives in Bendigo with her husband and two children.

Mick Hoban

Mick Hoban is a hydrogeologist who has worked on the project for 1.5 years. Previously Mick has spent 8 years managing a capital works program on the state-wide groundwater monitoring bore network, and has also worked for large consulting companies (SKM/Jacobs, Worleys) on mining, infrastructure, and groundwater resources management projects.
