Animating the Future: Girls in STEM Bring Movie Magic to Life

ree

This week, the Girls in STEM Club returned to the Discovery Science and Technology Centre for an exciting session of movie-making magic, with a focus on motion animation.  This creative process demonstrated just how much work and attention to detail goes into crafting an animated film.

The girls learned that creating a great animated movie doesn’t require a huge production team or expensive technology.  With the right techniques, even small changes can result in something magical.  The process began with storyboarding, helping to map out the movie’s concept.  Then, using iPad stop-motion software, the girls worked in teams to bring their ideas to life, capturing each frame with care.

The technique used was frame-by-frame animation, where every small movement of characters or objects had to be carefully captured to produce smooth, continuous motion.  While the process may seem tedious, the results were worth the effort, precision and minor adjustments in each frame were crucial.  One key lesson was the importance of keeping the camera steady in one position to ensure continuity and avoid jarring shifts in the final movie.

With a wide range of resources and tools at their disposal, the girls sharpened their skills in creating an animated movie from scratch while embracing teamwork and creativity.  The resulting clips were impressive, showcasing the girls' ability to handle the camera and produce a cohesive, entertaining film.  Their enthusiasm and passion for learning made this session a truly memorable and inspiring experience for all involved.
