Back at the Discovery Science and Technology Center, the girls delved into the fascinating world of Artificial Intelligence (AI), a topic that sparked both curiosity and amazement. As they gathered around Briga, this session’s facilitator, they began by discussing what AI is and the various ways it is integrated into their daily lives, from virtual assistants to recommendation systems. The girls were eager to share their thoughts, and it quickly became clear that while they had some understanding of AI, there was much more to explore.
They talked about the capabilities of AI, how it can learn and make decisions, and even how it is used in creative fields like art and music. The discussion naturally led to questions about the ethical implications of AI such as can machines really think like humans? Should they? The girls were intrigued by these questions and expressed a mix of excitement and concern. They wondered about the impact AI might have on jobs, privacy, and even human interaction in the future.
The highlight of the evening came when the girls participated in an interactive AI activity. They were given the task of drawing simple objects while an AI program tried to guess what they were creating. To their surprise, the AI was incredibly quick, often identifying their drawings in less than six seconds. Laughter and exclamations of disbelief filled the room as the AI accurately guessed everything from cats to airplanes.
This experience left the girls both impressed and a little unsettled. They realized the power of AI and how advanced it has become, sparking a deeper conversation about its potential and the responsibilities that come with creating and using such technology. As the session drew to a close, the girls left with a newfound respect for AI and a lot to think about regarding its role in their future.
Thank you to Alissa and Briga from the Discovery Science and Technology Centre for running the session and providing the photos and brief about the session. Your support made it possible for me to prepare my weekly report for the club’s members.
