This week’s Girls into STEM Club session ventured the inquisitive girls into the captivating world where art and science converge. Drawing inspiration from innovative artists like Vincent Bal, the girls immersed themselves in the intriguing practice of "shadowology."
Armed with a single object and a torch, they embarked on creating pictures that came to life through the shadows cast by their objects. This exercise revealed the surprising and unpredictable nature of shadows, which change dramatically depending on the angle of the light.
The exploration did not stop there. The girls were asked to form small groups to delve deeper into this concept, pushing the boundaries of their imagination. Working in teams of four, they crafted sculptures that only revealed their true form when illuminated. What seemed like simple building blocks and markers were transformed into imaginative creations. One group’s setup became a detailed cruise ship, navigating an ocean of shadows, while another group’s arrangement morphed into a bustling city block, complete with trees and high-rise buildings reaching for the sky.
This engaging activity not only sparked the girls' creativity, but also fostered important skills in collaboration and resilience. They worked together, communicating and sharing ideas, overcoming challenges, and adapting to unexpected results, all while producing remarkable pieces of art. The process required patience, teamwork, and a willingness to experiment, showcasing the girls' ability to think critically and creatively.
The energy and excitement in the room were undeniable as the girls navigated this unique artistic exploration. Their dedication and ingenuity resulted in extraordinary and imaginative works of art, showcasing their ability to blend creativity with scientific principles in a truly inspiring way. The session was a wonderful reminder of the endless possibilities that arise when art and science intersect.
Thank you, Alissa, for providing the photos and the session’s brief.
